On Trial

With all the various opinions collected, it is time to draw the line.

Through our journey we came across people who offered a wide range of opinions. Some people are of the belief that cultural appropriation is something that has happened many times in history and is a part of the world becoming more closely tied such as Christina Han.

If cultural appropriation is something that is a part of the world and needs to be approached carefully there are some proposals. Tamil Heritage Month and similar celebrations of culture provide an opportunity for cultures to be shared in a positive way in which there are high levels of respect which most people, such as Abu Nomad Tarek, believe is important if someone is going to wear fashion from a different culture.

Caution is still necessary as was revealed by many people such as Retzia Sherman and the S.O.U.L. group. Although these people may have been upset by your choice of clothing, they may not go public as seen in the "day in the life" feature, but the damage that your choice of clothing has is still felt.

The line between appropriation and appreciation is very blurry and ultimately comes down to the meaning of the clothing you are wearing as well as how open the group is to sharing their clothing. Another key factor is that when wearing cultural clothing from another group knowledge and respect play a large role in how the group will feel. Furthermore, there are individuals that use privileges (sexual orientation or race) that allow them to appropriate without being questioned. These individuals must understand that their privileges do not give them the right to appropriate any form of culture or fashion regardless of whether it goes unnoticed or not.
