Criminal Life

Respect is something that people feel entitled too - especially when it comes to their culture. Criminal Life shows different ways in which fashion can be appropriated.

The 'Day in the Life as an Appropriator' shows Matthew Burley featured as an appropriator sporting cornrows for a day on campus. The responses to Burley's temporary haircut were documented on camera and on Snapchat.

The 'White Maasai' was a name given to Jake; a friend of Matt who has travelled to Tanzania and Kenya. Jake details his experience and described the way people reacted to him having spacers as a white male.

'Fashion For Sale' shows pictures from the annual Fashion for Freedom event that takes places at Laurier Brantford. The event features a fashion show that allows students to showcase clothing from different cultures. This fashion show is an alternative example to various fashion shows that have appropriated culture and exploited fashion trends.

'Appropriating the Past' features vintage stores located at Toronto's Kensington Market that sold old cultural clothing from different cultures. The owners displayed some knowledge of culture but not enough for them to not be categorized as appropriators.
